Mr. Ghyanendra Nath Bajpai, a distinguished business leader, is the former Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India, or SEBI,  India's sole regulator for the capital and commodities markets, both cash and futures. Earlier, Mr. Bajpai was Chairman of the Life Insurance Corporation of India, LIC, India's oldest and largest life insurance provider in the public sector.  Mr. Bajpai is known for his visionary leadership and exemplary integrity.  He has served/serves as Non-Executive Chairman and a Director on corporate boards in India and other countries, has received several awards for contribution to business, and has authored several books.  

Mr. Bajpai has been Chairman of the Corporate Governance Task Force of the International Organization of Securities Commissions and the Chairperson of the National (India) Pension Trust Board and National Stock Exchange of India.  

As Chairman of SEBI, Mr. Bajpai was noted for reforms and tightening governance standards. Under Mr. Bajpai, LIC was transformed to meet the challenges of deregulation and competition from global insurance companies.  Under his leadership, LIC became a financial powerhouse with the largest asset base in the Indian subcontinent.  

Mr. Bajpai has been a member of the Board of Directors at General Insurance Corporation of India, ICICI Bank, Unit Trust of India, Axis Bank, Tata Chemicals, Jindal Steel, Thane Electric Supply Co., National Housing Bank, Discount & Finance House, Indian Railway Finance Corporation, India International Insurance Ltd., Singapore, and Ken-India Ltd.  Nairobi (Africa) among others.  Mr. Bajpai was also the Non-Executive Chairman of the National Stock Exchange, Stock Holding Corporation of 
India, LIC Housing Finance Ltd, LIC International EC Bahrain, LIC Nepal Ltd and the President of the Insurance 
Institute of India. 

Currently, Mr. Bajpai is the Non-Executive Chairman and Non-Executive Director of several corporates in India.  He serves on the  Board of Advisors of the Indian Army Group Insurance Fund and as a Member of the Governing Board of the National Insurance Academy and BIMTEC, the Birla Institute of Management Technology. He has served on the Governing Board of the Indian 
Institute of Management, Lucknow.  

He has served a number of important Committees, among them are as Chairman of the Committees on ‘Investment Pattern for Insurance and Pension Sector, Committee to Review Implementation of Informal Sector Pensions, Committee to Review Investment Guidelines for National Pension System (NPS) Schemes in Private Sector, IFCA Committee on Insurance, Working Group on Tracking Outcomes of Bankruptcy Code and Member of High-Level Task Force on Leveraging the Post Office Network: Empowering Rural India. 

Mr. Bajpai has been a visiting faculty at leading institutes of Management and Training. He was a visiting professor at Middlesex University, London. Currently, he is an Emeritus Professor of Finance, National Insurance Academy. He has lectured at the London 
School of Economics (LSE), Harvard University, and has addressed OECD & IMF seminars. 

Books

He has written five popular books: The Securities Market, Marketing of Insurances, and How to Become a Super Successful Salesman. 
His 4th book, “The Essential Book of Corporate Governance” published (now under second print) by an international publisher of repute released in 2017 has been very well received by the market in India & globally, including in the UK & USA and is being used as textbook in IIM Bangalore. His fifth book on Securities’ Market, “A Game Changer’s Memoir”, published by Penguin and released in 2018 has also been very well received internationally. Currently, he is engaged in finishing two books to be released in 2025. One amongst them is a book on Management Theory, which he has himself evolved. He is also now a columnist and writes regular columns in leading newspapers and magazines. 

He received a number of awards, notable among being the “CNBC TV18 Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Finance” award from Prime Minister of India, W. G. Chirmule Puraskar, 2014 for commendable contribution in the fields of Insurance & Regulation of the Stock Market and Lifetime Achievement Award from BIMTECH.  Mr. Bajpai holds a Master’s Degree in Commerce from the University of Agra and a Degree in Law (LL B) from the University of Indore.  Mr. Bajpai is an avid golfer, lives in Mumbai and travels widely.
