Was surprised to see Tata employees residential building in an abandoned state with broken windows at Bandra Kurla complex this morning. After inquiries, I learnt that the building had been damaged by the Metro railway construction work. One can imagine the havoc the monstrous Metro work has caused throughout the metropolis from Colaba to Dahisar and Mulund and beyond in the last several years.
The ground plus six storey building of the Tata Communication centre residential complex is opposite the Income Tax building.
A few feet from the Tata building, the Metro work has completely taken over the footpath and a BEST bus shelter exposing people to death and injury on a busy, wide road going by the fancy name of Avenue . The bus stop is covered completely with a cloth and commuters are at a loss to know the route numbers. And all this is happening about half a km from the MMRDA headquarters.

A section of the officialdom seems to care two hoots for the public and public opinion. It has taken over a public garden and football ground next to the officers’ quarters for its own exclusive use, sealed it off and ousiders are not even allowed a peep inside. And this is an organisation which oversees planning for the metropolis and is implementing the Metro project. These are the people talking of smart cities and a great future for Mumbai and seamless transport. A section of the media is clearly deaf and silent if not bought over. Of course the BMC is no less callous. The Tata building is in a prime area. A modest two bhk flat would fetch a monthly rent of at least one lakh rupees. While such buildings are empty, there are thousands of luxury apartments lying unsold, empty in a metropolis where lakhs live in slums or are poorly housed.
